Maunawilli Falls Hike

From the house..... go right on 72 to 61 (Pali Highway, main intersection by Castle Hospital), go left on 61. At first light, Auloa Road, turn left. At fork in road, stay to the left. Follow road as it winds through housing. Stay on road to the end, see hike entrance to the left, park in front of houses to the right. You will see a sign that says: "Maunawilli Falls Hike."

This is a nice hike that starts in the rain forest and meanders along, over the stream a few times, up one hill, and then down by the stream to the water fall. There is a pool where you can swim. If you swim across the pool to the other side, climb up the side and go behind the first water fall, there is a second pool and second water fall.

Makapu'u Lighthouse and Tide Pools

From the house..... go left on 72, out of town, past the pier, past Sea Life Park, past the place where all the people are body surfing, up the hill, around the point. As you come down the hill, you will see cars parked along the side of the road, and a service road on the left hand side going up the hill. Park near the entrance to the service road, about half way down the hill. Walk up the hill via the service road. If you stay on the service road to the end, it will take you to a couple of lookout points. One of Waimanalo Bay, one of the Lighthouse and you can see Molokai and sometimes Lanai and Maui, and during whale season, you will be able to see whales.

If you are adventurous, you can go down to the tide pools. As you are walking up the hill you come to a lookout point where they have installed a telescope and a board about humpback whales. Just to the left of the board, you will see a trail going down the hill. If you look way down you will see the tide pools. Take the trail down the hill. It's not the best marked trail, but you should be able to find your way. At the bottom there are several pools you can swim in. There are fish and crabs and such in the pools and the water flows in and out. Be very careful not to get too close to the edge. Even if it appears the waves are not too big, there are often rogue waves that come up and can cause you serious injury. We usually stay in the back part of the pools, so even if a big wave comes, we are safe. This hike is fun, but remember you have to climb back up that steep hill. In the mornings, this hike can get awfully hot as the sun is all on that side. The afternoons are a lot cooler, after the sun is bit behind the climb back up the hill.

Manoa Falls Hike

From the house, turn left on 72, stay on this until it turns into H-1. Take the University Avenue Exit. Go up the hill and back into the valley. Stay on Manoa Road as it winds through the valley past the houses. The road dead ends at the hike. This is a nice hike to a waterfall along the stream. It can be quite muddy if it has been raining.
For more hiking, just before the falls there is a cut off hike. This hike has 25 switchbacks as you wind your way up the mountain, through the bamboo forest to the top of the ridge. If you have the energy, it is worth the effort, and it does take some effort.

Sea Life Park Luau…. Every Wednesday night. Lots of fun. Our guests at the Beach House Hawaii insisted I put this on immediately as a “must do.” Kini and his brother and sister went and loved it. Very low key, and close.  Food is buffet style and you get to walk around the park and see the animals. The dancing is spectacular.

Glider Rides with Mr. Bill

One of our favorite activities. For $35 you can fly the glider, with the pilot behind you. This is on the North Shore, by Dillingham Airfield. The views are great, you can sometimes see whales during the season. Call ahead for reservations 677-3404. You can also go up with two people in the back and they will make a video for you. It is really nice to be up in the glider, so smooth and quiet.

Surfing Lessons Waikiki

We've been telling you for years to take a surfing lesson at Waikiki if you want to surf during your stay in Hawaii. Kini and I took a lesson from Tony Moniz of www.FaithSurfSchool.com. We both did Paddle Board for the first time; and we are hooked. Tony is a great instructor, a great person, professional, and just pure fun. Faith Surf School does private and group lessons on both traditional and paddle boards. Give the Faith Surf School a call; and give surfing a try. 808-931-6262.

Snorkel with the Dolphins
Did we hear you say you would like to swim with the dolphins and turtles and tons of tropical fish (and the whales during the winter months)? Here is a link to an awesome boat where you can do these things. It is on the west side of the island, be sure to leave at least an hour before you are supposed to board the boat. It is beautiful out there and you can snorkel right off of the boat. We took our family and had an excellent trip. We swam with pods of spinner dolphins, tropical fish, turtles, and an octopus. Our daughters, 5 &6 years old, had such a great time. Mention you are staying with Beach House Hawaii for a discount.

Three Tables / Sharkes Cove (snorkeling)

If it's the summer time and the surf isn't pounding, head up to the north shore for some good old snorkeling at Three Tables/Sharks Cove. Three tables is located accross from the foodland in Waimea, and Sharks Cove is just a short walk north east from there. Three Tables has a beach, and the snorkeling is great if you feel adventuresome enough to go out through the 'tables'. Sharks Cove is rocky and the entrance is a bit more difficult. Water clarity is excellent, so bring an underwater camera for the turtles!
